After winning an international architectural competition in 2012, the construction of House of One designed by Kuehn Malvezzi trio in Berlin is finally about to begin on May 27, 2021. With an estimated investment of 47 million euros, the building is envisioned as an interfaith place of worship, which will unite a mosque, a synagogue and a church under one roof.

The religious “house” will be built at Petriplatz, a religious site in the city centre dating back to the early Middle Ages, which initially included a total of five churches. The last of these was damaged during World War II and was finally demolished in 1964 by the GDR authorities. When archaeological excavations were carried out between 2006 and 2009, fragments of these architectures’ foundations were found. It was initially planned to build a memorial or a new church on the site, then replaced by something that would reflect Berlin’s contemporary identity.

The Berlin-based studio chose a solid brick building for the delicate project – almost one meter thick – characterized by pure, almost completely blind volumes. The simple and clean design is presented as an architecture free from religious symbolism while maintaining the monumental presence of a sacred space. The unity of the external language is contrasted by the heterogeneity of the internal spaces. The three Abrahamic religions claim their respective liturgical autonomy, with synagogue, church and mosque grouped around a central square. This, a high domed hall, is the central meeting area, placed in continuity with the urban space of Berlin.

The building is crowned finally by a protected loggia. At 32 meters high, it offers a view of the city and stands as a visible landmark on the city’s skyline. Being the last level of the central space, it is another space for gathering and meditation.

Finally, the cornerstone for the place of worship will be laid on May 27, marking the end of 10 years of planning and the beginning of about four years of construction. House of One will be the symbol of a new adventure in interfaith cooperation and dialogue.
