Attention to detail and valorisation of traditional craftsmanship and construction techniques are the principles according to which Lucas y Hernández-Gil has renovated a house in Villalba de Los Barros, a village in the south of Extremadura. The region between Spain and Portugal is known for its gastronomic tradition and the rural landscape rich in oaks and featuring typical red earth, from which are typically produced tiles and pottery. The architects turned to local craftsmen to recreate the terracotta floor that was no longer recoverable, innovating the local technique with a contemporary and irregular arrangement of the tiles. Other restored elements are some richly decorated historical doors and ceiling vaults, which are finished with a lime plaster that contrasts with the raw one of the walls. Finally, a few touches with a contemporary style complete the VB House, an elegant home that preserves vernacular memories and feelings.
