Part artwork part viewing platform, the structure stands at the centre of the Hudson Yards development. Its 2,500 steps and 80 landings interlock in a honeycomb formation that wrap a funnel-shaped atrium, providing its apt – yet temporary – name, the Vessel. It's due to be renamed via poll to evidence its publicness.  Vessel stretches 46 metres above a plaza designed by Nelson Byrd Woltz Landscape Architects to give views over the 11-acre former railway yard that now encompasses over 1.5 million square metres of commercial and residental space, with around 100 shops, 4,000 homes, as well as offices, education and leisure spaces by Diller Scofidio + Renfro, SOM, KFP and Foster + Partners.  Four staircases and an elevator rise from the structure's star-shaped base into the web of steps, a steel frame fabricated in Monfalcone, Italy, and covered in copper-coloured steel cladding in New York.
