With 115 million dollars collected (out of the 130 needed), work commences on Renzo Piano’s project to extend the Woodruff Arts Center, one of the four largest cultural institutions in the United States with the Alliance Theatre, the Atlanta College of Art, the home of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra and the High Museum of Art on campus.
Piano has planned three new buildings: a central pavilion, a building for the collections and one for the administration offices. He has also redesigned the entire campus, which will become a sort of arts village dotted with pedestrian ways, terraces and green squares. The original building, designed by Richard Meier in 1983, will be restored. Work should be completed by the end of 2005.
