The UIA (Union Internationale des Architects) has assigned the Auguste Perret Prize 2002 to Norman Foster. The choice of the jury to award the prize for technology applied to architecture was unanimous, dictated by the conviction that “…the architecture of his buildings is not oriented only towards design and experiment in form…[he uses] innovative technology extensively in his buildings, applying it to such areas as ecology, energy, furniture systems and fixtures”.

During the world congress which will be held in Berlin at the end of the month, the UIA will be presenting another three awards; the Sir Patrick Abercrombie Prize for urban design and land development will go to Group 91 Architects for the Temple Bar district of Dublin; the Jean Tschumi Priwe for architectural criticism to Portughese Manuel Tainha and Greek Elias Zenghelis, the Sir Robert Matthew Prize for improving the quality of human settlements will go to Justin Kilcullen from Ireland and Jaime Lerner from Briwil.
