Minneapolis: the Guthrie Theatre by Jean Nouvel

The plan by Jean Nouvel for the new seat of the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis has been presented officially on the last 7th February: a wide breath cultural centre, dedicated to the arts of the theatre and to the teaching of acting, composed by a 1,100-seat auditorium with a thrust stage, a 700-seat proscenium stage and a 250-seat studio theatre.

The new group of buildings of – 255,000 square-foot (23,690 square-meter) – will rise along the Mississippi river and will have a tight relationship with the water, thanks also to the belvedere bridge arriving just upon the river. The current seat, built in 1963 in another area, will leave place to the Minneapolis Sculpture Garden.

The realisation of the new Guthrie, that will start at the beginning of the Autumn 2002 will be finished within the 2005, and will cost 125 millions of dollars coming from a public and private financing, - 75 millions from private donations, 38 from the State of Minnesota and the last 12 millions from the Museum-. The local partner of Nouvel will be the Minneapolis based studio Architectural Alliance, leaded by Tom De Angelo.
