A new demountable home for the Stuttgart Opera

The project has been selected as the winning proposal in the international competition for the new temporary headquarters of the Württembergische Staatstheater Stuttgart.

The project resulting from the collaboration between a+r Architects and NL Architects was selected as the winning proposal in the international competition for the new temporary headquarters of the Württembergische Staatstheater Stuttgart. The architecture will temporarily house the Stuttgart State Opera and Ballet during the renovation of their current home, the Littmann Building.

The new building will span three blocks, offering rehearsal space, workshops for set production, offices, and storage for props and sets, while the opera’s roof will also serve as a base for an innovative residential development. With a view to reuse, once the opera and ballet return to their original location, the spaces will be reused as a “makers city”, contributing to the vision of creating a mixed urban environment. dynamic.

Keeping the future use of the building in mind from the earliest design stages, the design team maximized the potential for reuse and minimized the need for necessary demolition. The main hall, along with the stage and foyers, is made of wood, ensuring its complete disassembly. The intention is to relocate this section of the building after renovation, promoting a circular approach to construction. The other structures are designed with a robust low-carbon concrete skeleton. This design allows a high degree of flexibility, enabling a wide range of programs and commercial uses to be accommodated in the future.
