Volkswagen is betting big on the future of electric mobility (and the future of the entire company) with the release of the ID.3, the first commercial VW car based on the MEB platform it created. True to the nature of the brand, the ID.3 was born with the intent of being an EV car for the masses. Some even called it the Beetle of the new millennium, with a reference to the model that revolutionize the automotive industry with its release in the late 1930s. In the future customers will be able to choose from three models, with batteries that go from 45-kWh (205 miles range), 58kWh (261 miles) or 77-kWh (342 miles). As of now only the mid-tier model is available to preorder in a configuration called 1st Edition, which comes with a GPS navigation system, heated front seats and steering wheel, 18-inch alloy wheels. Prices are the real news, though, as the German manufacturer has promised to keep the price below 30.000€ for the entry level model, at least in Germany. Not yet “for the masses”, maybe, but certainly an improvement over the average selling price of EVs, at least in Germany. According to Volkswagen, pre-ordering customers will start getting their ID.3 in June 2020.
