IKEA’s new Rognan line is a robotic furniture system designed for people who live in small apartments and lack the space for full-fledged living room or bedroom solutions. The first product of the new series is a big unit that includes a closet, a bed, a couch and a desk. Each one of the elements can be accessed or pulled out when needed with a touchpad controller, thus saving up to 8 square meters of living space. It doesn’t sound like much, unless you’ve lived or visited the tiny homes of people living in high-density cities like Hong Kong or Tokyo (which incidentally will be the two markets where IKEA plans to start the roll out of the Rognan series in 2020). The unit was built on a robotic platform developed by Ori Living, a U.S. startup pioneering the design of automated furniture with their (expensive) Pocket Closet line.
