At the next Geneva Auto Show in March Volkswagen will unveil the concept for a new electric dune buggy. Unlike the original vehicle from the 60s and 70s, the new dune buggy, also called the e-Buggy, will be silent and certainly more environmentally friendly.
While the original version of the car was built on the chassis of a modified Volkswagen Beatle, the 2019 dune buggy is based on Volkswagen’s new MED – i.e. the Modular Electric Drive Matrix that the company will use to build dozens of new electric car models during the next 6 years.

"A buggy is more than a car. It is vibrancy and energy on four wheels," said Klaus Bischoff, Head Designer at Volkswagen. "These attributes are embodied by the new e-buggy, which demonstrates how a modern, non-retro interpretation of a classic can look and, more than anything else, the emotional bond that electric mobility can create."
The MED is a big bet for Volkswagen, as the company is expecting to sell at least 10 million electric vehicles based on the modular platform. Although it will serve as the foundation for high-volume cars such as VW’s much-rumored 25.000$ Tesla killer, according to the company the e-buggy proves that the MED has the “potential to facilitate the development of low-volume niche vehicles” as well. As of today, though, it’s still unclear whether Volkswagen plans to sell the new all-electric dune buggy, or if the vehicle will remain just a style exercise to prove a point in the fast-growing electric mobility market.
