Refreshing a symbol: The North Face Mountain Jacket turns 40 years old

Blending heritage design with cutting-edge materials, the historic jacket gets revamped: “it can remain relevant for another 40 years”, Darren Shooter, Design Director at The North Face, explains to Domus.

To mark the 40th anniversary of its iconic Mountain Jacket, The North Face has unveiled a new version celebrating the history of a garment that has remained a staple of the brand’s DNA for decades – and still is today – for both its aesthetics and functionality.

Updating a garment that has shaped not just a brand but an entire segment of outdoor apparel is no easy task. The challenge lies in striking the perfect balance between honoring the past and embracing the future.

Originally launched in 1985, the Mountain Jacket was designed for ice climbing. The black fabric granted durability and resistance against icy surfaces, while the unconventional decision to place the logo on the upper right back – a first at the time – took into consideration that the jacket would often be viewed from behind. “I believe that the Mountain Jacket captures the essence of The North Face design philosophy. It has modern, clean design lines that are built for function and purpose. The proportions of the jacket are perfectly balanced, which gives the style a timeless identity,” says Darren Shooter, Design Director at The North Face.

The new S25 version stays incredibly true to the original, maintaining its signature fit, paneling, and unmistakable bold black contrast, while introducing innovations through advanced fabrics and finishes. “We wanted to stay as true to the iconic aesthetic of the original jacket while embracing new technology so it can remain relevant for another 40 years!” Shooter adds. In addition to the new materials, the update features the cutting-edge DryVent-Mono™ technology, which allows for the creation of a recycled polyester membrane for enhanced breathability, wind resistance, and water protection.

This redesign highlights The North Face’s shows how the brand’s archive plays a crucial role in the creative process. Founded in 1966 as a specialist in technical gear, the brand continues to draw inspiration from the tents, sleeping bags, and backpacks they offered in the 1960s. The North Face’s strength lies in transforming its history into a vital source of inspiration for designing new garments – pieces that stay true to the brand’s clean, modern aesthetic while incorporating details and colors that evoke another era.
