Foster + Partners has unveiled the project for 350 Park Avenue, the third office tower to be built on the historic avenue by the studio led by Norman Foster, guest editor of Domus 2024.
Located on 52nd Street, halfway between the recently completed 425 Park Avenue and the JPMorgan Chase headquarters under construction at 270 Park Avenue, the 62-floor tower will be all-electric and provide a total of 139,354 square metres of space for the American company Citadel.
As with the 270, the design aims to integrate with the surrounding urban fabric, echoing the architectural language of other buildings in Midtown Manhattan, from the historic Rockefeller Center to the more recent Central Park Tower. “350 Park Avenue is a new symbol of the rebirth of this world-famous street, resulting from the city’s Midtown rezoning initiative. With its stepped back, gently tapering form, the building follows in the tradition of distinctive towers along Park Avenue, creating a silhouette that is very much ‘of New York’” asserts Nigel Dancey, Senior Executive Partner of the studio.
The new tower will have a larger surface area on the ground floor, where a large covered plaza activated by cafés, shops and restaurants will be placed in direct continuity with the existing pedestrian walkway, and will continue on the subsequent floors, gradually narrowing upwards to create a series of green terraces overlooking the East River.
The flexibility of the interior spaces is ensured by an off-centre core that increases the usable space of the rooms and by the future possibility of a lobby separate from the work spaces.
