The ARKEN Museum of Contemporary Art in Ishøj, Denmark, hosts “Unseen”, the largest exhibition ever held in Scandinavia of Anish Kapoor’s works. The exhibition, inaugurated on April 11, 2024, showcases a selection of the internationally renowned artist’s most monumental sculptures and installations, present in the contemporary art scene for over four decades.
The works – including the colossal “Memory” in Corten Steel from 2008 and the seminal “Descent into Limbo” from 1992 – explore the relationship between the visible and the invisible, light and darkness, material and ephemeral, through the manipulation of perception. “Unseen” invites visitors to experience a sort of transformative close encounter with Kapoor’s artworks, which encourages a rediscovery of the world through the body, fostering a “psychosomatic” experience that serves as a counterpoint to the digital consumption dominating modern capitalist life.
Marie Nipper, the museum’s director, stated: “The technical demands of these impressive works have, in some cases, necessitated the physical transformation of the museum itself. Floors have been removed to accommodate the vast scale of the pieces. Visitors can expect an experience unlike any other – not just with Kapoor’s art, but also with the transformed ARKEN”.
