Tencent’s new headquarters reflect the company's dizzying growth

The new Shenzhen building rises in height in a spiraling movement, anchoring itself to the city through an incubator and a large public space.

Büro Ole Scheeren has won the competition for the headquarters of the multinational Tencent in Shenzhen, the Chinese Silicon Valley. The 500,000 square meter campus is intended to accommodate 23,000 employees and is characterized by a spiral shape symbolizing the company's rapid growth. Towering over the city skyline, the project, titled Tencent Helix, aims to unify the master plan of the future technology and financial district on Dachanwan Island, with a 14-hectare site on the Qianhai Bay.

The structure presents itself both as a cohesive whole and a sum of different elements. It ascends with four towers of varying heights and flexible spatial configurations, while a network of pedestrian pathways extends horizontally, connecting the building to the urban context.

At the base of the spiral is a dynamic space called the Vortex Incubator, connecting the four volumes and hosting various activities, such as the Tencent Academy, recreational spaces, a dedicated wellness and health center, a conference center, and workspaces. In this space, personnel from different sectors can have the opportunity to meet, get to know each other, and collaborate thanks to an interactive spatial configuration. A large atrium then leads to the Urban Forum, an open urban space for the public that houses restaurants, shops, public services, and cultural facilities, anchoring the multinational headquarters to the surrounding city.
