The opening of the tower of the former Tempelhof Airport (THF) in Berlin marks an important step in the redevelopment of the historic airport that closed its doors in 2008. The roof, 600 square meters, has been paved in Kebony wood and houses a viewing platform 26 meters high. The project thus creates a new space dedicated to exhibitions and events of various kinds, including fairs, concerts – such as the annual Tempelhof Sounds Festival – and sporting events, such as the 2023 Berlin Formula E-Prix – dedicated to single-seaters with electric motors.

The architecture studio MLZD and the designers Karle & Rubmer faced the challenge of combining the historic elements of the iconic building with current construction standards. The roof terrace becomes accessible thanks to a suspended steel staircase that guides visitors from the former central terminal and the Kebony Clear cladding was chosen to make the space durable and sophisticated. In addition, Kebony wood provides a sustainable alternative to tropical hardwoods, helping to reduce deforestation.
Tempelhof’s renovation project is an example of how innovative methods can transform old, high-carbon-emitting industrial sites – such as abandoned airports – into sustainable spaces for the community.
