From April 17th to 23rd, Milan will host Salone del Mobile and Fuorisalone, whose title of the 2023 edition will be “Laboratorio Futuro” and will offer a rich calendar with a focus on circular economy, reuse, sustainability of processes and materials, innovation, urban regeneration and role of artificial intelligence. This edition aims to be an opportunity for discussion and collective sharing to analyze the present, recognize the mistakes of the past and generate alternative ideas and new practices to face the future, which is increasingly problematic.

5VIE theme will be “Design for Good”, with focus on auteur design and on the contamination with art and craftsmanship. The idea is to look at design as an opportunity to create deep connections with others, promoting mutual care as a tool for sustainability.

Isola Design District will host the now customary Isola Design Festival, with six collective exhibitions dedicated to circular and regenerative furniture, collectible design, contemporary craftsmanship, design tech and wellness.

Brera Design District will host the gloTM for art art project developed together with the artist Agostino Iacurci. Milano Durini Design will involve more than 40 companies present in the city center, through the fil rouge of the “Urban Metamorphosis”.

Moving away from the traditional Fuorisalone paths, then, the ALTROVE project will make the design of emerging talents dialogue with the places of the Giambellino district.

The spaces of the Acquario Civico will be animated by the sound and visual interactive installation “Trame”, by STARK in collaboration with Alice Buroni, Gloria Lisi, and Alex Buroni. The work invites us to rely on a perceptive and holistic understanding of reality, reflecting on how our actions are always intertwined with those of others, creating infinite possible relationships.

Alcova will reveal the monumental spaces of the former slaughterhouse of Porta Vittoria, hosting over 70 projects that explore research on materials, contemporary craft and sensory design, alongside established realities and emerging talents. In this context, the IED (Istituto Europeo di Design) will present “Ecocentric”, a project developed together with Giacimenti Urbani, an association that deals with reducing the waste of resources and the activation of circular economy from the bottom-up.

Design Variations, event curated by MoscaPartners, presents “Breath”, site-specific work on the facade of the Circolo Filologico Milanese, designed by studio Zaven, and “REFORMING FUTURE” exhibition of the projects of the master course of Michele De Lucchi with Andrea Branzi of the Politecnico di Milano, set up inside the Istituto Marchiondi Spagliardi, a brutalist masterpiece by Vittoriano Viganò, which for the first time opens to the public.

The Dropcity Centre for Architecture and Design, by architect Andrea Caputo, will host exhibitions, installations, conferences and talks inside the Central Station’s Warehouses. Morel Milano, former headquarters of a manufacturer of cotton fabrics for footwear, opens its industrial architecture of 1930.

Tortona Rocks starts from the question “How do you take care of tomorrow? Design instructions” to reflect on how design can encourage alternative lifestyles to face climate change.

Among the protagonists will also be IKEA, which celebrates its 80th anniversary with an exhibition dedicated to its most iconic products of the past and the preview of some novelties.

Base Milano presents the third edition of “We Will Design”, making room for democratic and inclusive design, accessible not only economically, but thought in a plural way, including people of all ages, abilities, gender and culture.

Assabone presents “Design for Communities”, an exhibition dedicated to the project realized by the NGO Live in Slums, in collaboration with the designer Giacomo Moor, who designed beds, tables and benches for the refectory and dormitory of the elementary school in Mathare, one of the largest slums in Nairobi.
