For Milan Design Week SolidNature, a natural stone brand, asked the Dutch designer Sabine Marcelis and OMA to design “functional works of art”. As a result, Sabine Marcelis’ Bathroom, the Balance wardrobe, and the Inhabitable bed by OMA, led by Ellen van Loon, came to life, now available in limited editions.
Bathroom consists of several parallelepipeds in Pale Pink Hue onyx intersecting each other. In line with Sabine Marcelis’ studies on refraction, transparency, and light, the installation seems to shine from the inside.
Made of Green Satin marble and Fresh Flow onyx, the Balance wardrobe instead defies the force of gravity by rotating around a central structure. With a weight of about 1400 kg, it can be used on the one hand as open shelving, on the other as a cabinet with doors. The design is clean to bring out the aesthetics of the grain of the materials to its maximum.
Finally, the Inhabitable bed is a block in marble and onyx consisting of two elements: a base fixed to the ground and a parallelepiped that rotates and slides on the surface of the first, revealing its secret compartments. All the pieces were on display at Alcova during the Design Week, and are now available for purchase at an undisclosed price.
