A startup from California wants to build the world’s first space hotel, complete with a restaurant, a cinema, cafès and enough rooms to host 400 guests at a time. Orbital Assembly Corporation, which describes itself as the world’s first large-scale construction company, will build the hotel inside the Voyager Station, a radial vessel that will orbit Earth at the height of about 550km.
At 200 meters in overall diameter, the station will have 11,600 sqm of habitable space, divided between 24 living modules (including rooms and common areas) and transit tubes. Like a regular hotel, Orbital Assembly Corporation’s space hotel will have luxury suites, luxury rooms and standard rooms. According to plans, guests won’t have to float about to get to their heavenly abodes because the station will feature artificial gravity thanks to its rotation.
“With voyager station we don’t want to have to develop any new technologies, we want it to be technologies that are already in hand, it's just that we are applying them in new ways to get a structure and a facility like that”, said Tom Spilker, the company’s CTO.
With a clear display of Silicon Valley ingenuity, Orbital Assembly says that work on the station will start in 2025, with an expected deployment date in 2027. The company won’t probably meet its wildly optimistic goal, but one can still wonder and enjoy the nice sci-fi inspired renderings while waiting for the 6th season of The Expanse on Amazon Prime.
The first orbiting space hotel could be open by 2027
