DJI launches a 4K camera drone that weighs like a smartphone

The Chinese company has launched the successor of the Mavic mini drone: it’s lightweight, foldable and easy to use for anyone interested in aerial photography.

Dji has introduced a new drone for videography and aerial photography. The Dji Mini 2, as its name suggests, is compact and lightweight. With its 250g it is only slightly heavier than some of the most bulky smartphones available on the market, such as the iPhone 12 Pro Max, or the new Huawei Mate 40 Pro.

Despite the diminutive size, the Mini 2 packs a lot of the advanced features DJI’s known for, such as the pre-programmed modes for various type of aerial shooting and the AI-based functionality that enable the drone to follow a subject, keep a set height, return to base without human intervention and more.

The “Dronie” mode, for example, is like taking a video selfie with a drone with a set height up to 120m; with Helix mode, the drone rises in a spiral movement around the subject; Boomerang mode mimics the elliptical trajectory of a real boomerang. Mini 2 can also shoot composite panorama photos from 9 different angles, or stitch together multiple pictures to create a spherical or 180° picture.

The camera sensor on the Dji Mini 2 is capable of shooting 12MP photos, both in JPEG and RAW, or 4K/60p videos. Images are sent live to the remote connected to the companion app on the user’s smartphone with a fast downlink, thanks to the integration of Dji’s OcuSync 2.0 radio technology.

Design-wise the Mini 2 follows along the lines set by the Mavic mini, with strong edges and foldable rotor arms. The strong aesthetic similarity with its predecessors is a good choice, as it makes the Mini fit the wider line-up of the very popular Mavic drones.

Dji Mini 2 is available in two configurations. The standard kit includes the drone, the remote, and one battery. It will set you back 459€. The Fly More Combo kit adds two additional battery, a battery charging station a Dji bag for 150€ more than the basic price.
