The colours of Jan van Eyck celebrated by designers

An exhibition at the Design Museum in Ghent highlights the inventiveness of one of the greatest Flemish artists, Jan van Eyck, through design projects focused on the use of color.

The Design Museum in Gent celebrates the masterful use of color by Jan van Eyck (1390-1441) relying on an unexpected curatorial choice. In a long-distance dialogue with the Flemish painter, not artists but contemporary designers are called to witness their experimentation with colors, materials and light effects, working by analogy with van Eyck's colors.

The game of references is developed through multiple paths. In the central exhibition, 100 pieces chosen from ceramics, objects and textiles highlight the importance that design has recently given to innovation in the field of color. In the eleven Experience Rooms curated by eleven designers, on the other hand, is the search for a synesthetic impact that give shapes to the set ups, stimulating the visitors’ imagination through instinctive reactions that involve the senses and imagination.
