Ikea has turned its blue bag into a portable pillow

In Singapore, the company redesigns the Frakta into a padded shopping bag for impromptu naps, meeting a need that is very much felt in the Asian city.

Over the last 30 years, Ikea’s manufactured Frakta bag has become one of the most used bags in the world. Originally created to provide IKEA customers with a sturdy bag to carry their stuff home, it has since been celebrated for its versatility and emblematic aesthetics, inspiring well-known fashion designers like Virgil Abloh, Demna Gvasalia or Rolf and Mette Hay to create new and imaginative variations of the iconic blue bag.

The Resten Bag, designed by IKEA Singapore in partnership with Singapore-based creative studio The Secret Little Agency, is the last new take on the iconic bag, which has been playfully transformed into a multifunctional item: a carry-all bag and a cozy pillow. Although retaining its familiar shape and hallmark blue hue, this original version presents a pillow-shaped design with a layer of quilted, soft textiles and stuffing that can be used as a headrest in the most unexpected or uncomfortable places. Designed to address Singapore's growing sleep deprivation issue, the IKEA Resten Bag is a portable solution which aims to promote the importance of rest in Singaporeans’ hectic lives by providing a moment of rest blending functionality and well-being.

The limited edition item can be won through social media competition or participation at IKEA Singapore’s upcoming Restfest, which will be held in September.
