The ambitious requalification and restoration project that has involved the Mausoleum of Augusto and Piazza Augusto Imperatore in Rome for years is now moving towards its final phase. The second stage to enhance the monumental complex, scheduled to begin at the end of 2024, has been entrusted to studio OMA, which will design the Mausoleum's interiors and setting, where archaeological findings of the excavation work will be displayed documenting 'the evolution and metamorphosis of this vast sector of the northern Campo Marzio'. In addition to the interior design, this phase will also include the renovation of the Mausoleum’s outside area through the installation of lighting and accessibility systems together with the restoration of the burial cell. The restoration of Piazza Augusto Imperatore and the Mausoleum’s museological project proceeded in parallel and were divided into two functional lots to organically reconnect the entire area, returning to the community a large sector of the city that had long been neglected. “The square, originally designed by Vittorio Morpurgo in the 1930s, had destined the Mausoleum to a condition of decontextualized isolation, accentuated by the disparity in height between the ancient and modern parts” explains the mayor Roberto Gualtieri, underlining the importance of reinserting this symbol of the Capitoline monumental heritage into an urban dimension, in harmony with the surrounding space. Construction is expected to be completed by 2026 and will be funded by the Bulgari Foundation.
