On July 27, in Riga, a new series of exhibitions opened at Kim?: “Disposable Gloves Guide” by Merike Estna and “Investigation” by Maija Kurševa. The double solo show will run through to September 2, 2018 in one of the most propulsive hub for contemporary arts in that region. The name kim? is an abbreviation of the Latvian phrase - "What is art?". Since its opening in 2009, this interdisciplinary centre for contemporary art has organized exhibitions by Latvian and foreign artists. Kim? has been selected as the organizer for the Latvian pavilion at the 58th Venice Art Biennale with solo exposition by the incredible and talented artist Daiga Grantiņa, curated by Valentinas Klimašauskas and Inga Lace and formulated in collaboration with Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art- LCCA.

At Kim?, in Maija Kurševa’s latest exhibition the emphasis is put on the spatial experience that draws and guides the viewer into an associative tale that relies both on observation and suspicion that a set of artworks possess an idea. Whilst capturing real and imaginary reflections, the link is formed between ostensible idleness and the notion of the creative process, between ‘the narrative of the absurd’ or eventually ‘causes and conclusions’, bringing together everything that adheres to an investigation.
“The drawing in front of me” affirmed the artist “is the beginning of what has to come. Page after page becomes the past. The only thing that the drawing depicts is that time has passed in creating the drawing. The drawing depicts only the time which has passed during its creation.”

Maija Kurševa was born in 1981 and graduated from the Art Academy of Latvia Department of Visual Communications; she has also studied at Berlin University of Arts. She has participated in group exhibitions in Riga, Vilnius, Berlin, Moscow, Tallinn, Brussels, St Petersburg, Bremen, Helsinki and elsewhere; she has also had several solo shows. At the moment Maija Kurševa is active in the artists’ collective named Popper Publishing, is among organisers of the Riga Zine Festival, as well as teaches screenprinting and illustration at the Art Academy of Latvia.
