A solitary tree floating in the Copenhagen harbour

Marshall Blecher and Magnus Maarbjerg (Studio Fokstrot) launched a prototype floating island in the Copenhagen Harbor. The project is part of the “Copenhagen islands project”, an archipelago of floating wooden platforms that will support several functions, reimagining the relationship between cities and the sea in a time of rapid urban development and sea level rise.

The ‘archipelago’ comprises a floating sauna island, floating gardens, floating mussel farms, a floating diving platform to support boaters, kayakers and swimmers. The first platform is a 25 sqm island that hosts a 6 meters-tall linden tree. It was built by hand by hand in the boatbuilding yards in the south harbor of Copenhagen, using traditional wooden boat building techniques. Thousands of people enjoy the clear waters of the inner harbor, and the platforms could be brought together for events and festivals, or moved to catalyze activity in newly developed or underused locations.
