Landscape camouflage

Hilario Isola took a detail from a famous painting by Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo and transformed it into a large scale site-specific installation as part of a wider project.

The fourth landscape is an environmental installation by Hilario Isola at La Morra, Italy, that represents the first chapter of the project Atelier del Camouflage created by the artist himslef and will be extended in over 101 municipalities of the Langhe-Roero and Monferrato vineyard area, protected by Unesco. The aim to make invasive architectures and structures “disappear” from the landscape, thanks to the experimentation of an eco-friendly fabric and innovative printing techniques.

The Installation Il quarto paesaggio (The fourth landscape) takes its starting point from a magnified reproduction of a 40 cm detail of the famous painting Lo specchio della vita (1895-1898), by the master of Divisionism Giuseppe Pellizza da Volpedo, part of the collections of the GAM – Galleria Civica d’Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Torino. The piece is made of polyester fabric for exteriors, realized with Newlife thread produced with recycled PET bottles, printed with the sublimation technique, and die cut. The project uses camouflage as an unusual ‘estoration’ tool and as a device to offer new and surprising points of view on the landscape.

The technological process for the photographic reproduction of the work has been kindly provided by the Centro Conservazione e Restauro “La Venaria Reale” and it is especially conceived to cover the big cement wall next to the bastions of the Rocca del Belvedere at La Morra, Italy. The aim of the artist is to give life to an original twine between real and painted landscape, in a work that at a closer look reveals the incredible richness of colours used by Pellizza da Volpedo and from far mixes harmonically with the colours of the surrounding nature.
