FÁBRICA: Seat balls

Made of used soccer balls, the Seat Balls by FÁBRICA are handmade in Guatemala combining current manufacturing technologies, age-old craft techniques and unconventional materials.

FÁBRICA: Seat ball
The center of the chair is a soccer ball. It is a rigid center where the coiled metal springs are tied together to form a bigger flexible sphere.
The ends of these springs are stuffed with colorful guaipe (Spanish word for cotton waste) and fixed together with cotton rope in the hole of rings. Its fibrous character recalls Guatemalas ancient textile craft techniques
The Seat Balls can be used as seats, chairs, for basic gym excercises, or can be a "furniture sculptural element".

FÁBRICA’s work unites current manufacturing technologies, age-old craft techniques and unconventional materials such as horse reins and jute sacks for upholstery; tire tube for leather; marbles as a ball bearing system, etc. Because the objects the studio makes need different skills and materials, a diversity of ethnic groups and craftsmanship are working together under one roof to create a new object in the hope it will capture Guatemala’s present-day’s spirit.

Ana González and Hubert Schoba, both Architects, started FÁBRICA a small multidisciplinary design studio located in a house, in the historical heart of Guatemala at the end of 2010.
