Don't wait to get old to end up in the archives

The Giovanni Sacchi Archive has opened its doors to young designers and typographers, seeking to create a bridge between the value of the lessons from history and new design.

The Archive, in the former Breda area in Sesto San Giovanni, is a fascinating place that tells the story of the great model-maker Giovanni Sacchi. With the first edition of Don't wait to get old to end up in the archives, young designers have been offered an opportunity to exhibit their work. The archives is thus seeking to create a bridge between the value of the lessons from history and new design.

Space was provided free of charge without a selection of participants. The works on display — product design, fashion and graphics — were self-produced. Thirty projects are on display in an installation conceived by the MagutDesign office to give each young designer limited space that could be managed and organized on their own.

At the same time, some typographic activities were held with designers from all over Europe. Officina Tipografica Nove Punti , who will work for a month at the archives, invited six designers to hold a workshop during the Salone week entitled Letterpress Workers, giving professionals the opportunity to work together, discuss and prepare an exhibit based on the initial brief, "There is no electricity. What will you communicate to the outside?" which will be held in the same space until 13 May.

The archives was transformed into a laboratory where the printers grappled with printing using movable characters, proof presses and wood glyphs with the discussion conducted in terms of innovation, combining rigorous design and experimentation with a technique that has become "historic."

The aim of the endeavor is to renew the function of the archives and to create a showcase for young talents by taking advantage of the space and the website.
