Ceramic design company Mutina will mark their Salone Del Mobile debut in 2012 with two exclusive collections, one designed by Patricia Urquiola, the other by Raw Edges.
Mutina's booth at the Fiera has been specially designed by Patricia Urquiola and will showcase Mutina's renewed corporate identity as the group look to affirm their status as a "non-traditional tile company". The original collections, characterised by peculiar aesthetic, technological and eco-friendly standards that Mutina consider to be their calling card, have been well received at previous tradeshows.
Raw Edges' TEX is their second project for the ceramic company. It is a rich, multi-coloured tile collection inspired by the textures of textiles, a proposal whose starting point was borrowing an existing texture and transforming it into a new one. The tiles are rhombus in shape, acting as a simplified enlargement of a basic knitted stitch which when aligned create the "fabric". This effect is furthered with each colour range comprising of three different shades, allowing for arbitrary arrangements which further communicate the "textured" nature of the tiles.
Patricia Urquiola's AZULEJ range is her fourth for Mutina. It is reminiscent of the ancient handcrafted majolica ceramic, while instead crafted from hydraulic cement. This tradition, re-imagined in a contemporary sense, claims to be "an innovative mix and patch, deliberately random, which combines abstract patterns and subtle neutral colours". The colours are fixed on the material in an irregular and natural way, seeping on the edges in homage to the handcrafted process that inspired their design. According to Mutina, the result is a "unique and surprising patchwork, which offers compositional freedom and a distinctive design, preserving the handmade features and combining them with the performances of a high technology material."
