New Roland Garros Stadium Design Exhibition

World famous Tennis tournament Roland-Garros will have a brand new stadium in Paris.
The French Tennis Federation organized an architecture competition for the design of a new stadium to host the world famous Roland-Garros Tournament. The committee invited 4 architecture studios to participate: Atelier Christian de Portzamparc, Paul Andreu architect Paris et Richez_Associés, Marc Mimram and Renzo Piano Building Workshop, Marc Mimram being the winner of the competition with an innovative design. The new stadium will have a 15,000 seats central court equipped with a removable roof and two additional covered courts to host 2 500 and 1 000 spectators each.
About the winning design, Mimram's studio said: “We want this new centre to become a public space of entertainment, a meeting place, created, built, shaped, specifically for this yearly appointment and the lights that come with it.” As a specific requirement for the competition, all design proposals presented innovative sustainable solutions according to the environmental requirements of Paris' Plan Climat. Mimram’s design also included special characteristics: “We want to propose to you to go beyond and build the first sports centre with positive energy in Paris. This will be possible with the integration of 1500 m2 complementary photovoltaic cells installed on the southern and western façades. Lets take the challenge. We believe it’s extremely symbolic for the new Roland Garros Stadium expansion.”

An exhibition is currently on display presenting sketches, images, plans, animations and models from all four invited studios at Pavillon de l’Arsenal in Paris. The exhibition will be open until August 30th, 2009. Admission: Free.
