Every year, Hermès reinvents its historical venue Pelota in via Palermo, a sports facility opened in the mid-1940s, then converted into a dance floor and event space. If the 2022 installation was dominated by a series of luminous, inhabitable lanterns with simple geometrical shapes, the 2023 project is a quieter, more elusive presence. “The Power of Fundamentals” builds a room within a room inside Pelota, or rather it suggests its presence. Two solid platforms, the walkable podium on the ground and the suspended sky, are connected by several curtains made of thin iron rebars, an allusion to the usually invisible reinforcing steel of concrete. This permeable container hosts objects from the new home collection, which is profoundly “material” just like its container, and it evokes the aesthetics of the primitive, the sustainable, and the minimalist.
