Venini. Ron Arad’s vases with glasses

The first work in blown glass by the famous designer is a gesture of technical irreverence. And the result is an extraordinary range of objects, all different.

Where are my Glasses, Ron Arad for Venini, Milan Design week 2018

The new ArtGlass by Venini makes an electrifying debut: Rod Arad getting  to grips with blown glass. “Recently I spent a lot of time designing spectacles, frames for the lenses. And again recently I was busy blowing glass. So I thought about bringing these two worlds together.” And in the personal wake of an explosive and disruptive language, this encounter could only be crystallised into something provocative. Starting from the name: "Where are my glasses?" Ron has transformed the classic cry from the visually impaired into a brilliant fusion of glass and metal spectacles, blown together to the point where the frame becomes a sort of belt holding in the bulging glass. Vase-sculptures that are invariably different and always torn between spontaneity and control of form.

Subdivided into three variants: Under, Single Lens and Double Lens. “When they ask me where I get my ideas, I say ideas are everywhere. The problem is not to find them, but to understand which ones to pick first. Then it happens that one idea stands out more than the others, and when that happens it’s impossible to ignore it. That’s how it was in this case.”
