Decoration carries stories and traditions. With this design for Smeg by Dolce&Gabbana, small everyday objects back to telling stories, brightening up our kitchens with the colours of Sicily. “Sicily is My Love” describes Italian traditions and folk festivals through a set of freestanding kitchen appliances and matching Fab28 hood with refrigerator, rendered unique by their bright colours and narrative feel. Presented in two versions, one features images inspired by the poetics of theatre, puppets and the Carretto Siciliano, in fiery red and orange, the second takes inspiration from majolica patterns in shades of blue and white.
We asked Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana to talk about the ideas behind the design.
How did this decoration project come about?
We have enjoyed a successful collaboration with Smeg for some years now. For us it is important to continue to endorse Italian craftsmanship and this collaboration is a reflection of that.
How has the decoration evolved that you have designed for Smeg from the first incursion into Sicilian folklore in 2016?
We decided to continue to celebrate Sicily, its landscapes, its traditions and its symbols. We highlighted Italian craftsmanship and some of the artistic excellence of the country we love and even more, the region of Sicily that we have always loved and that inspires our fashion. When you think of Sicily, the colours of these carts come to mind, the folklore, the history and the traditions that are linked to a seemingly simple object but that in the past was a fundamental work tool, going on to become a work of art within our history.
