The project by Mexican studio Peca, based in Guadalajara, for the Loto collection began with an exploration of the use of turned wooden bars and the possibilities of cylindrical shapes combined with the idea of positive/negative. What characterizes Peca’s objects is the constant search for materials of the Mexican artisan tradition reworked in contemporary forms. Caterina Moretti, founder of the studio, went to Tlaquepaque, a town known for its traditional craftsmanship, to create the table tops. The table tops are the result of the fusion of glass panes from old windows. During melting, the glass creates bubbles that highlight the material and its origin from recycling. A similar research concerns the fabric of the poufs. It is lamb’s wool, left natural, hand-woven on traditional looms in San Juan Chamula, Altos de Chiapas. In the case of the pouf the fabric becomes the main element and the wooden bars can be seen only at the base while, on the contrary, in the small tables they become the characterizing element.
