Vitra Design Museum presented the first solo exhibition in Europe of the Mexican artist duo Lake Verea, active since 2005 and formed by the photographers Francisca Rivero-Lake and Carla Verea. Their latest project "Modern Paparazza", started in 2011, poetically portrays some of the single-family houses designed by renowned modernist architects. The buildings by Gropius, Breuer, Neutra, Schindler, Mies van der Rohe and Johnson are caught in their intimacy, "paparazzati", so much to be defined as "architectural portraits". The exhibition shows 24 works, including a video, divided into three chapters according to a gossip criterion: which architects were actually "frenemies" since they were linked by complicated professional and personal ties? The Austrian-born Richard Neutra and Rudolph M. Schindler, Walter Gropius with his protégé Marcel Breuer and finally Ludwig Mies van der Rohe with the US-born Philip Johnson, who collaborated on the 1956’s Seagram Building.
Paparazza moderna: 24 architectural portraits to the most renowned Modernist houses
Lake Verea creates a photographic composition of Modernist buildings by Gropius, Mies van der Rohe and others approaching them like paparazzi. Now on show at Vitra Design Museum.
