Engineer, architect and one of the most ingenious and eclectic inventors of the 20th century, Richard Buckminster Fuller is remembered as the creator of Dymaxion House, low-cost, light housing that exploited a number of tie beams hooked onto a central column with a geodesic dome, patented in 1954. This lightweight, self-supporting structure could be enlarged as desired, starting from a single module. The latest tribute to him is being made by the US postal system, which has dedicated a stamp to this brilliant inventor.
Bucky is immortalised in the unusual portrait of him produced by Boris Artzybasheff for the cover of Time in 1964. 60 million copies of the 37-cent stamp have been printed and it was presented officially on 12 July. E.S.
