Paul Smith’s Robots

Intricate Japanese metal robots, a giant motorised rubber Godzilla and a striking plastic Martian from Cadbury, originally distributed as a gift in a marketing campaign in the sixties.

These are just some of the unusual pieces brought together this summer at the Design Museum in London in a Collector’s Cabinet installation which documents “the insane passion” of one of Britain’s leading designers. Paul Smith’s passion for toy robots, space ships and motorised cars goes alongside a love for furniture from the turn of the century and vintage books and magazines to make up an important part of his creative sensibility: some pieces from the collection are used to decorate the Paul Smith shops.
A way which is definitely original, even if a pretext, to draw attention to the designer.
