This project brings order to an eclectic array of structures, creating Italy’s first integrated service centre for the management, promotion and conservation of public and private art heritage.
The entire surface of the low block on the street has been painted petroleum black and coated with a shiny red glass “skin”.
The long, abstract and transparent front leads towards the Open Care entrance and contains dual-height reception spaces that act as a filter between the city and the services inside.
The exterior of the cumbersome Palazzo dei Frigoriferi building is lined with ramps up to the top floor, a public and reception space where the vaulted ceilings have been restored. A 23-metre-high gallery crosses the interior.
The Palazzo del Ghiaccio, once one of Europe’s major indoor-skating rinks for sports events, also forms part of the complex and is now a delightful dual-height space for exhibitions, fashion shows, gala dinners and conferences.
