Selected at LUMA Rencontres dummy book Award and at Photoboox Awards of Photolux, mentioned at Kassel Photobook Award andMarco Bastianelli award, finalist at Voies Off Screening Nightsand at Warsaw Photo Days and winner of Gibellina Photo Road and Sony World Photography Award in the Discovery category, the latest project by Jean–Marc Caimi and Valentina Piccinni in now becoming a book thanks to the refined french publisher André Frère. Contrary to other although beautiful publications evolved from self produced dummies in the latest years, all to often weighed down and trapped by their inward–looking and self–referential authors, this is a vibrant, graphic, truthful and, above all, outward–looking rather than navel–gazing piece of work. With the direct and immediate style they’re known for, sometimes almost technically wrong (so perfectly contemporary) Güle Güle shows a city in constant flux, Istanbul, nevet to be taken for granted, maybe easier to be described by images rather then by words. Gentrification, marginalization, discrimination, these are just a few words that Caimi & Piccinni underline in the pre–sale page of the book, as well as the issues that comes with the integration of Syrian refugees and Kurdish community; but in the ever–changing relationship between form and content, stressed by the diptychs that characterise most of the double spreads, unfolds a depiction that seem to strangely tackle issues both wider and more personal the one could expect from a visual inquiry. And the title (goobye, in turkish) emphasise this short–circuit by leaving us with the feeling of having left the city without having even landed, of already missing a place that we didn’t have time to understand.
