‘Route 66’ photographs by Franco Fontana
With 150 images, taken last year and never before exhibited, Franco Fontana presents at the Palazzo Magnani in Reggio Emilia (until 4 August) his latest voyage in the heart of the US. Covering four thousand kilometres (2248 miles) of the legendary Route 66 – passing through three time zones and eight different states from Chicago to Los Angeles – the photographer from Reggio Emilia has ‘frozen’ the atmosphere of the road towards the west defined the ‘mother of all roads’.
With service stations, ghost towns and old advertising hoardings making up a compendium of ‘road archaeology’, Route 66 has in fact been progressively abandoned since the seventies when a new network of four lane roads (Interstate) created faster connections which avoided passing through city centres.
