The redevelopment project of a former farmhouse in the countryside of Lennik, Belgium, has given shape to a dynamic dwelling. Signed by Objekt Architecten, the renovation of the old rural structure, originally characterised by a house, a workshop and a few buildings distributed around a courtyard, made it possible to add new elements for more fluid circulation between spaces and to experiment with local materials and colours.
The pre-existing architectures are no longer disconnected from each other but converge into a homogeneous whole resulting from the addition of a tower, which houses both the staircase block and a studio on the top level from which a panoramic view of the landscape can be enjoyed.
The original entrance, which once faced the courtyard, has been moved to the rear: here a swimming pool has been installed between the old stable walls. On the ground floor are the living area and an office overlooking the street, while in the tower, on the first level, is the sleeping area with bathrooms, work and play spaces. The protagonist of the project, the tower is characterised by its red brick facade – in harmonic opposition to the totally white facades of the original architecture – and by the glass used in the studio guaranteeing luminosity and comfort.
On the roof, a patio enhances the building, but it is not the only one on the property: numerous patios have been installed between the walls and facades, some of them double-height. The house has been transformed using simple materials that recall tradition, in a reference to the pre-existing buildings.
