Close to the city of Melbourne, studio MI-JI has completed the design for a home in which the use of material and the arrangement of volumes generate unexpected relationships in the domestic space. Situated in a flooding area, AB House is detached from the ground, defining a relationship of lightness, constructing a series of raised platforms that mediate between outdoor and indoor space.
In this elevated house in Australia, technical solutions become aesthetic design
AB House by Mi-JI Studio sees technical expressiveness approaching the dynamism of volumes, where the use of materials is the protagonist.

The perimeter is punctuated by pillars, always autonomous, which define a virtual architectural volume within which the built elements move almost freely. The corridor bends, moving the distribution of spaces to generate a series of opportunities for light, and different complementarities between the domestic area, the garden, and the intermediate walkways. The various elements are designed independently, accommodating the house's functions and opening up to different degrees of privacy.
The project uses metal as an expressive material for the exterior finishes. These are varied treated, designing different grains starting with the use of corrugated metal sheets for the opaque walls, smooth pillars, expanded metal sheets for the semi-transparent portions, and grating elements for the external platforms.
Thus, the simplicity of the architecture is clarified in the details, where the technical solution becomes the aesthetic program. Examples of this are the bolting of the corrugated metal sheet or the bracing elements that transpire through the expanded metal, becoming expressive and functional elements.
Therefore, the combination of volumes and surfaces, opacities, and transparencies, defines a dwelling that sets the domestic space in continuous mediation with its surroundings.
