A house in Valencia, in El Cabañal district, has been transformed into a contemporary dwelling with precise geometries. Mirasol House is located in one of the city’s typical streets, in an area by the sea characterised by low houses inhabited by fishermen.
In Spain, a renovated fisherman’s house welcomes natural light
The project in Valencia by Iterare Arquitectos, Mirasol House, is distributed around a light void and hides a contemporary transformation in an old neighbourhood.

The renovation by Iterare Arquitectos preserves some of the characteristic elements of the original architecture and transforms them, adding new features and functionality. The facade blends perfectly into its context and conceals a contemporary renovation that enhances the rooms. The studio added a skylight that takes on the function of a sunflower – hence Mirasol, sunflower in fact – suitable for retaining light to diffuse it uniformly throughout the house.
The building is distributed around a void that accommodates the light coming from the skylight: the double level of the house uses natural light, which is welcomed by the smooth, neutral walls of the new interior space. The architecture, developed longitudinally, has a hidden patio at the back that guarantees natural ventilation at the various levels.
The spaces are bright and the use of soft materials on the floor and walls emphasises the entry of light, enlarging and unifying the various environments. Sharp angles and geometric shapes are the hallmarks of the design.
