One of the most important horticultural gardens in the United States, founded a hundred years ago by Pierre S. du Pont, Longwood Gardens is preparing to implement its latest 2010 master plan, conceived by West 8 Urban Design & Landscape Architecture, through the new project of the architectural firm Weiss/Manfredi.
A new vision for Longwood Gardens
Longwood Reimagined is the plan to revitalize the public spaces of the historic horticultural garden near Philadelphia. Among the new commissions, a 3,000-square-foot greenhouse devoted to restoring the seasonal variations of Mediterranean nature.

Conceived as an opportunity to make the visitor experience more fluid, the new Longwood Reimagined calls for the construction of a 3,000-square-foot greenhouse that will be located at the center of the seven-acre estate, connecting the various gardens and winter pavilions on the east-west axis. Inside, the gardens designed by Reed Hilderbrand, interspersed with fountains and pools of water, will be inspired by Mediterranean nature, restoring the seasonal variations of wild and cultivated landscapes with plants of aloe, laurel, blue flowers, marruche as well as cypresses and centenary olive trees, which will also be combined with suspended plants.
The Cascade Garden, the only garden in North America to be designed by Brazilian landscape architect Roberto Burle Marx, will be relocated to a new 350 square meter greenhouse, while the six greenhouses from the first half of the twentieth century will be restored and used for temporary exhibitions.
