The private house designed by the German architect Florian Maurer, director of the Canadian Firm f2a Architects in 2003 in Naramata, British Columbia, lies on the edge of a rocky slope overlooking Lake Okanagan. Arranged on the ground and inspired by the courtyards of Latin America, it houses three C-shaped independent bodies which give form to a pleasant interior garden.
The original project evolves when the new owners ask the Studio to design a small addition; a multipurpose space that can accommodate the sculptures and paintings from their art collection.
The new volume, suspended on steel poles anchored to the rocks, is placed on the slope of the hill that descends towards the lake and is connected to the western body of the house by a covered staircase.
This steep path marks the threshold between the two architectures and form a viewing abstract space; on one side a small reflecting casket that mirrors the forest and the sky houses the works of art, on the other a wooden house in complete harmony with nature.
The gallery seems to float on the rock covered by stainless steel panels and open to the lake by continuous windows.
