Building techniques, lifestyles and material resources: a small pavilion in Lapland, designed by Toni Yli-Suvanto Architects, materialises local traditions in a contemporary key. The Arctic Sauna Pavilion provides additional living space for the summer seasons, with a multifunctional room and sauna, a true meeting place for people from the Nordic countries. The L-shaped volume meets with its openings all the remarkable points of the landscape, while the walls sloping outwards recall the architecture of old local warehouses. The interiors are entirely made of wood in the raw state. Only the two fireplaces in the centre of the rooms stand out with their stone cladding. To minimise the environmental impact and support the local economy, 95% of the building materials are purchased, processed and assembled locally.
