Chile. A remote black house in the backdrop of Villarrica volcano

Casa Hualle is an excavated volume designed by Ampuero Yutronic, in order to frame the wild landscape of the Araucanía region.

Ampuero Yutronic, Casa Hualle, 2017

The single-family residence Casa Hualle has been carried out by Ampuero Yutronic, an architectural office based in London and Santiago del Chile. The location of the 230 sqm building is the Araucanía region, Southern Chile, between a lake and the Villarrica volcano.

The presence of these elements in the surrounding landscape are the premise for the deformation of the initial form, a parallelepiped; the manipulation enacted on the initial volume transformed this abstract form into a device, the built project, that reacts to the natural environment. Due to its remote location, the house is designed to achieve passive measures.

Casa Hualle develops in two floors and is crowned by a folded roof, which shape determines the sinuous movement of the ceiling in the interiors. The central double height space is the social core of the building, oriented on the north-south axis, overlooking both the volcano and the lake. Apart from the common area, the ground floor contains two guest rooms with bathrooms. The upper floor is accessed through a stair, close to the entrance of the house, that brings to the master bedroom through a walkway, suspended over the double height space.

The residence is connoted by a sharp contrast between materials: while the elevations are wrapped by thin vertical softwood slats, painted black, and are marked by natural wood frames corresponding to the openings, the interiors are characterised by a whiteish plywood, used for vertical partitions and the stairs. The floors are made of exposed concrete with a smooth finish.
