Paraguay. A red house that emerges from the soil

The building by Jose Cubilla is environmentally friendly: the 85 percent of the building materials are sourced from the site itself.

Piribebuy is a historic and rural location 80 kilometres from Asuncion, Paraguay. Jose Cubilla has designed a house for a large family. Trying to minimise the project´s impact, the first step was understanding the strata, layers, soil dynamics, winds, fluids, textures, colours, topography, flora and sky. The construction seems to emerge from the place.

Cubilla has conceived an austere, affordable and environmentally friendly home, where 85 percent of the building materials are sourced from the site itself. His interest is focused on vernacular and traditional constructions that are intelligently designed and economical. The adobe bricks used for the interior walls and vaulted ceilings are made from earth from the site.
