The scheme, winner of the first prize in a national ideas competition, was realised between 2002 and 2006. Largo Mancini represented a break in the urban structure of the city of Melfi, a gap in a strategic position sitting alongside important buildings and urban spaces: the town hall, the public park and the vertical and compact old centre.

The transformation brought about by the project can be perceived even in the cartography: before the competition the area was known as Largo Mancini after the building work was completed, it assumed the name Piazza Mancini.

This scheme is part of a broader and more diversified regeneration project promoted by the Comune di Melfi that has also involved the Nitti Cultural Centre, the Ruggiero Cine-Theatre and Piazza Umberto I.
