«As one of the many industrial areas alongside Berlin’s numerous waterways, the site is largely located on one of the canals. The island of Gartenfelder Strasse in Berlin-Spandau is surrounded by railway tracks that were once connected to the public transport system. The gigantic area of 244,000 m2 is outside the focus of Berlin’s urban development, with a heterogeneous set of buildings typical of company-owned property, and remarkable industrial monuments and post-war sheds side by side. The usable and rentable space amounts to 116,000 m2 with buildings dating from 1911 to 1992». From the exhibition catalogue of the student projects. G.G.
