With the aim of fostering and appreciating Indian architecture, and more generally exporting Southeast Asian design excellence, in 2001 the Indian magazine a+d (Architecture+Design), together with the Spectrum Foundation, decided to establish the “a+d and Spectrum Foundation Architecture Awards”, seven prizes given each year to the best local professionals in seven categories. Among the award winners in April were the general secretary of the Aga Khan Award Suha Ozhan, for his global contribution to architecture, dean A.P. Kanvinde, who was given a gold medal career award, and three architects of different nationalities: Hijjas bin Kasturi (Malaysia), Tay Kheng Soon (Singapore) and Sumet Jumsai (Thailand). The initiative has achieved a great deal in its first five years, attracting international attention to architecture from a country undergoing unprecedented economic growth, which will soon be going at the same pace as China yet is still little known to the western world.
